A visit to Singapore Esplanade

The 3 of us visited Singapore last week for a performance at Singapore Esplanade.  During the visit, thanks to our friends, Chong Meng who offer a great hospitality at his home at Seaside Residences.

About the Show: 5trings

We have enjoyed the show very much. To give a short introduction, is about 5 outstanding Singapore Chinese Orchestra musicians present acclaimed works by Hu Deng Tiao, the late composer who established the silk string quintet performance format.

Boldly incorporating Western string ensemble playing techniques while retaining the form of the traditional Chinese ensemble, this quintet features five traditional Chinese string instruments—erhu, pipa, yangqin, liuqin and guzheng.

We have enjoyed elegant and lively quintet pieces such as A Joyful Night, Martial Arts in the Farmland, Three Variations on the Yangguan Pass and more. The SCO Silk String Quintet comprises Lin Hock Siang (erhu), Zhang Li (liuqin/zhongruan), Qu Jian Qing (yangqin), Zhang Yin (pipa) and Xu Hui (guzheng).

About Singapore Chinese Orchestra

Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO), inaugurated in 1997, is Singapore’s only professional national Chinese orchestra. SCO, made up of more than 80 musicians, occupies the Singapore Conference Hall, which is a national monument. With Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong as its patron, SCO takes on the twin role of preserving traditional arts and culture and establishing its unique identity through the incorporation of South-east Asian cultural elements in its music.

Below is the first video of the video series introducing the Chinese Orchestra and music tradition:

SCO has impressed a broadening audience with its blockbuster presentations and is fast establishing itself around the world. Well-known for its high-performance standards and versatility, SCO has performed at numerous prestigious events such as the World Economic Forum and International Summit of Arts Council in 2003, and the 2006 International Monetary Fund (IMF) Annual Meeting.

With its vision to be a world-renowned people’s orchestra, SCO widens its outreach by performing regularly at various national parks, communities and schools. SCO also commissions its own compositions and organised the Singapore International Competition for Chinese Orchestral Composition (SICCOC) in 2006, 2011 and 2015 respectively. The competition aims to promote compositions that incorporate music elements from Southeast Asia, also known as “Nanyang music”.

In 2012, SCO organised Singapore’s first 23-day National Chinese Orchestra Marathon, a spectacular feat that drew the participation of 31 local Chinese orchestras which participated with over 44 performances and an audience of 20,000. On 28 June 2014, SCO created history through the second instalment of Our People Our Music by creating two Guinness World Records and three Singapore Book of Records with 4,557 performers at the National Stadium, Singapore Sports Hub. It is with this vision that SCO continues to inspire, influence, educate and communicate through its music.

Music School in Singapore

During the visit, we are so lucky to be able to meet Jayden, the co-founder of Music Mood, one of the music schools in Singapore. We shared our opinion on music and arts and he also shared his vision in making the arts accessible for everyone there.

He is so driven by his mission to entertain, engage, educate and inspire through the arts. You should also like the Music Mood facebook page. I would like to end this post by one of his quotes:

As a team of dedicated arts professionals who are also arts advocates, we recognise that everyone matters and that every single role is important. We aim to continue inspiring new musicians and cultivating the arts scene.

PS: we really enjoyed the ride at Singapore East Coast park as well! The tourist who are heading there be sure to check it out.

The Relation of Art and Mathematics

For a lot of artists and those who are more inclined to their creative side rather than their logical side might sometimes look at math like as if it is something that should never be learned. A lot of people dislike math but the fact cannot be denied that it is something useful.

The basic concepts of math can always be used for the different activities that people plan to do in the future and to the surprise of some artists, they will later realize that they also use math whenever they are working on their artworks.

It is highly important that kids at an early age discover that they do not hate math. Usually checking out Learning Out of the Box Facebook will allow parents to realize that they can let professionals teach children how math can truly be useful. Searching for the right math tuition centre Singapore can be easy if some factors are considered such as the accessibility of the place and the amount that needs to be paid.

Here is an example of how math is used in art:

Math Used in Early Paintings

There was a time when painters used to refer to math grids to make sure that their subjects will be right where they would like them to be placed. Up to present time, this is still being done by other painters. They know that the proper positions can make or break the paintings that they are doing.

Art Makes Use of Patterns – Which is Math Related

Kids usually make use of patterns and they learn what patterns are at an early age. Some adults may think that they have learned about patterns first in their art class but this is not true. Usually, patterns come from math. This is similar to the exercises that math teachers usually give regarding the shapes will come next in a certain sequence.

Symmetry

Symmetry is something that is highly important in art although there are times when some things are truly made asymmetrical mainly because of the concept or the main goal of the artist but of course, where is symmetry first learned again? It is not through art but also through math where shapes are usually shown to students and they can decipher if the shapes are symmetrical or not.

Do remember that there are always different things to know about math and it does not mean that just because you are an artist, you will be uninterested in this subject.

Picking Out the Right Lights for Your Home

Do you know that lighting is very powerful? There are a lot of things that lights can actually affect. For instance, you may not be able to sleep better when the lights are turned on especially if you tend to be a light sleeper. At the same time, your brain power may also be affected by the lights that you have at home. Knowing these details, you would want to make sure that all of the lights of your home are correct for all of your different needs.

If in case you are having trouble with making a decision, here are some things that you have to remember:

  • Make sure that you know the function of the room – If you are going to entertain guests in a room, would you like the lights to be ambient or bright? You have to consider this so that you will know what to search for. The best option may be to have lights that can be dimmed down so that you can brighten it whenever you need to and change it up again when you are alone.
  • Get to know the different types of lights. Ambient, task and accent lights are just the three you have to consider. Task lights are meant to be used for specific parts of the house but accent lights should be used for different areas of your home that you would like to highlight so they will be noticed more. Ambient light will act like your home’s natural light.
  • Remember to pick out lights per room and not for the whole house. Even if your led lights Singapore supplier may be offering a discount if you would purchase a lot of lights immediately, make sure that you will pick out lights depending on the room of your house first. This will make it easy for you to pick out a theme for the room ahead of time.
  • Consider the different types of lights that are available. You may want to pick out LED because this is known to be the most energy efficient but if you are concerned about design, you can always check out other light options but you can be sure that even if LED lights are expensive, they can last longer. If in case you need more details, check this out for proper information:

With all of the details that are mentioned above, you can surely have the right lights perfect for your needs to be installed at your own home.

Cool Artistic Furniture That You Want For Your Office!

Today, let’s stray a little bit out of our usual art topics. Nah, we are not shifting the focus on our blog. It just so happen that I chanced upon this article on Bored Panda about super cool offices.

At first when I read the headline, I thought, how much coolness can you give to an office, other than the world famous Google office? However, I was wrong! I was really amazed by some of the other offices in the world! Forget about just the design. Some of the office furniture, tables, chairs are simply too ‘cool’. If you are a new-gen guy like me, you will be blown away too.

Let’s enjoy some of the offices.

Google. (Who else?)

Are these offices considered art and design?

You see, we have never worked in such cool offices before. If you want to compare it to my own art college, I can say we can compete the layout, design, art work, cool furniture with them. But that doesn’t matter. What it amazes me is that you don’t have to be an art college to have artistic workplace!

Hold on, there are more cool furniture that you must see. If you must, get them for your office! What about us people here who have a plan to start a drama or theatre company in the near future? Sure, we may want to have these cool chairs in our office too, since we are ‘artist’ too!

You see how they move the table away to create space, and slot it back so that you can have your dining table back? Look at how they ‘modify’ the chair into something that you can do without, but when you need it, you just need to flip it up?

There are many more really cool stuffs out there (other than our own stage) that we should explore and see how much we miss out in the world. Overall art is not just about ‘watching a musical or a play’. It can be part of our daily lives, on how we apply them to live better, stay comfortable, and be like these cool offices, impress people.

Meanwhile, if you are keen to check out cool furniture, you can visit the facebook page on Office Furniture here!

The Value of Art

theatre-art

The culture of any place is highly influenced by the art form practiced in the area. Art can be of any form; Painting, Music, Dance or Theater. Though art is an integral part of our everyday life, it is not easy to appreciate it enough.

You must learn to recognize the quality work. Not everyone can understand the beauty. You need to spend time listening to music, watching drama, visiting art galleries, going to opera shows to start enjoying it deeply.

You should also choose any form of art which appeals you most and start practicing it. Some people see it as a waste of time thinking that it has no benefit at all. But, such people are simply ignorant about the benefits behind appreciating and practicing art.

They should learn more about it. It does not matter whether you indulge in art as an artist or an art lover, both are equally enchanting. Make it your hobby. The more you indulge in your hobby, the less you think about worries
in your life. Appreciating art is similar to falling in love with someone. It makes you happier.

It makes you feel good. We all know, a happy heart resides in a healthy body. So, isn’t it a miracle that you can be healthier just by looking at great art like those of Picasso, Leonardo Da Vinci, Von Gogh etc.. Art appreciation is in fact a well-established way of healing. Watching and/ or participating in theater is
another way to nourish your mind and soul.

The world is full of imposing and beautiful theatres.

The Seebühne (floating stage) juts into the Austrian waters of Lake Constance, and is the most dramatic setting for performances at the Bregenz Festival.

Venice’s La Fenice theatre staged world premieres of operas by Rossini, Donizetti and Verdi.

The Fox Theatre, Detroit, uses a blend of African and Asian motifs – called as “Cambodian Gothic”

The futuristic, curvaceous Guangzhou Opera House in southern China simply stands out. What can you use to describe this magnificent stage you see below?

Cornwall’s Minack Theatre was constructed at the end of a garden in Porthcurno to stage productions put on by local players

The Winter Garden is one of the last remaining stacked Edwardian theatres, constructed seven storeys above the Elgin Theatre in Toronto, Canada

Sydney’s Opera House visible from the ocean as well as from the bridges, it is one of the most iconic opera houses of the modern age.

And this is Dream Theatre from Boston Opera House:

There are many more such alluring and magnificent theatres in the world. All these countries represent different continents but they all have one thing in common; the love for art.

There cannot be a better way than a good opera show to relax yourself, to get rid of all the negative energy. Enjoy a really good
show and feel the difference in your life.
